Richard Kern
Medicated

Inspired by a conversation with his assistant about everyday drug use, Richard Kern launched Medicated, a project spanning 2010 to 2018, in which he interviewed women about the prescription drugs they take and how those substances shape their daily lives. The result is a photo book and series of stark, controversial videos that peel back the sanitized image of pharmaceutical dependency. His portraits young women in underwear, holding up pill bottles like Valium, Klonopin, even Relpax for migraines, set against cluttered bathrooms and unmade beds, feel less like staged confessions and more like voyeuristic glimpses into a quiet epidemic. With Medicated, Kern turns his lens on the intimate, often invisible reality of suburban addiction, reminding us that dependency doesn’t always look like the stereotype; it can be soft-lit, familiar, and right next door.
