SPATIAL OPERATIONS ‘0’ was an independent design studio program developed by Lachlan Welsh, held at At The Above in early 2025. Over six weeks, eleven students were guided through a curriculum of spatial research, outside the limits of traditional architectural practice. Founded on a belief in the value of spatial thinking beyond the design of buildings, the course incorporated material from philosophy, politics, ecology and technology studies to foster an expansive form of design thinking and practice. Each week, leading international theorists and practitioners provided public lectures, further widening the scope and ambition of the program. SPATIAL OPERATIONS ‘0’ asked students to investigate a site of their choice, focusing not on its potential for construction but on the deeper spatial narratives and complexities embedded within.

This book collects the visual research dossiers produced by the students, accompanied by documentation of the program and subsequent exhibition. The resulting compilation demonstrates an experimental pedagogical model for how design education can successfully operate outside of traditional institutions.
