At the Above
The Virgin Suicides

For her debut feature The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola invited British fashion photographer Corinne Day—known for her raw, 1990s portraits—to document the set. Day’s stark vision of female beauty aligned with Coppola’s empathetic, understated portrayal of girlhood. Edited from Day’s original negatives, this volume—released for the film’s 25th anniversary—offers a rare look into Coppola’s haunting staging of the Lisbon sisters.

Day’s photos capture both on-set moments and behind-the-scenes glimpses, revealing the shoot’s intimate, collaborative tone. Details like crucifixes, pink lace, and toffee apples evoke the tension between desire and repression central to the film. Featuring new texts by Coppola and Jeffrey Eugenides, the book bridges the original novel and its cult adaptation.
