The legacy of Dieter Rams ‘Less, but better’ ethos lives on in Tom Fereday’s furniture. 

If inanimate objects can be considered honest, we trust the Sydney-based designers’ furniture with our life. Regarding design, production and interaction equally significant; Fereday makes honourable furniture and it’s an honour to present Tom Fereday. 

Made entirely in Sydney Australia the SIA chair was forged from solid cast Aluminium and solid bronze to re-interpret the slender articulating chair in a new light. The collection took over three months to produce and finish all in Sydney and were made as a 1/5 series in polished Aluminium + 1/1 in solid bronze.

The SIA chair, meaning movement was named after its unique adjustable backrest. Inspired by traditional bearings the SIA chair is slender in design yet uncompromising in comfort. The SIA chair curves to the bodies form whilst using the minimum form required to achieve comfort. The chair is contrasted by a minimal stainless-steel frame which supports the sculptural elements and allows an adjustable backrest detail.

Solid bronze self-lubricating sleeve bearings elegantly assemble to the chair frame allowing for smooth angle adjustment of the chair and structural support for the backrest. Using the natural flex of the steel frame the backrest is simply press fit assembled. The SIA chair was the winner of the Mercedes-Benz design award and launched with NAU Design. The limited edition series follows on from this and presented the SIA chair in a new light.
